If you're a boater who cares about protecting ecologically fragile areas in the Barnegat Bay watershed, the state has posted a new interactive map for you.
The map shows 16 shallow areas with submerged aquatic vegetation and wildlife habitat, according to the N.J. Department of Environmental Protection. The areas provide shelter and food for fish, crabs, birds and other animals.
The map also shows the locations of marinas, sewage pump-out facilities, bait-and-tackle shops, launches and ramps, restrooms and places to get rid of trash, according to the DEP. The website with the map also has links to tips on green boating practices, the New Jersey Clean Marina Program and other information.
The map was compiled before superstorm Sandy struck the state, so you should contact facilities to confirm their current status, according to the DEP.
The map can be used on mobile phones, laptops, tablets and personal computers, according to the agency. A downloadable app for mobile phones is unavailable at the moment.
